Canton China August 8 39 killed 50 wounded as Japanese air raid struck central Canton near government offices and the Catholic cathedral which suffered heavy damage. Nine bombers targeted the area as French reports noted. In Yangtze region Chinese planes claimed sinkings and damage to Japanese warships amid ongoing river battles.
Douglas Corrigan arrives in Boston aboard a large airliner to a roaring welcome from thousands. Mayor Tobin and Governor Hurley greet him as Corrigan jokes about confusing Boston with Baltimore during the celebratory parade marking his “wrong way” cross.
Edward Welch 22 and Herbert Jones 26 of Girard drowned while wading in the Neosho River two miles below St. Paul. Jones sank in a deep hole calling for help, Welch tried to aid him and both bodies were recovered two hours later. In Ottawa county a 17 year old Marvin Henning from Glasco drowned accidentally at the Ottawa county state lake near Delphos after being found at the foot of the diving tower following a fall into the water.

The damaged crate from Douglas Corrigan's Ireland flight arrives in New York aboard the S S Lehigh. It will be moved to Roosevelt Field for assembly where Corrigan plans a test flight on Thursday after an experimental license issue is clarified.
Pastor Harold G. Barr of First Christian church preached at Central Christian church in Wichita yesterday to support Kansas Bible college. He will lead service here next Sunday and will travel to Boulder Colorado in late August to supply a pulpit there with his wife and children.
A murder charge was filed against 17 year old Wirt Parr accusing him of killing Alma Manning a 19 year old Locust Grove woman and burning her body on a funeral pyre.
Mrs Dora Baer age 60 mother of former heavyweight champion Max Baer died in Oakland California after months of illness. Max Baer had given her a blood transfusion Friday before her death.
Bulletin reports Sen. Alben W. Barkley leading Gov. A. B. Chandler in Kentucky Democratic senatorial primary. With precincts counted, Barkley shows a wide margin nationwide and in Jefferson County. Chandler concedes defeat and pledges support. federal spending is blamed by Mrs. Chandler. Haswell leads GOP senate race. other incumbents and a court case involving Dr. J W Bryan noted.
Los Angeles patrolman Rollye Galbraith installs a front mounted movie camera with a photo electric cell to photograph traffic violators as he chases them. The device aims to replace extensive testimony with visual evidence in court.

The 37th annual C P A picnic in Eudora city park features speakers Jonathan Davis and U S Guyer on August 16 and 17. Topeka Aug 8 The state board of regents says Kansas university Negro medical students may complete clinical requirements at University hospital Kansas City Kansas on merit basis like white students. It also approves Edward Williams Ellsworth Kan Negro for hospital class this year making him first Negro on the hospital student staff. Limited slots go to those with top scholastic records.
The city of Lawrence will hold a public hearing tonight at 8 o'clock in the council rooms at City Hall. A regular council meeting follows the hearing to discuss the coming year's budget.
