A catastrophic gas and premature shot explosion at Howen mine near Bowes injures and traps workers. Eleven bodies recovered, with eleven more feared dead, all foreigners. The blast wrecks the mine mouth and shakes Bowes, prompting a dangerous rescue in fog and fire damp.
Avtorway General Knox, arriving from New York, will stay with President Roosevelt in Oyster Bay. He plans to sail for Europe to discuss the Panama canal issue, including the status of the new Panama Canal Company and its property rights as required by U S law, amid potential French court action and possible extended litigation.
