Escape Bid Fails Bailey Recaptured by Sheriff Force
James Bailey, 21, captured by sheriff Thursday after attempting to flee yesterday afternoon. Two shots fired to stop him. Bailey, held for auto theft, described as a deserter from Camp Blanding Florida. He admits stealing two Florida cars and had been missing from Camp Blanding since last June. He remained in uniform and was driving a 1941 Ford with Florida plates reported stolen. Bailey was in Lawrence since Sunday. his wife in Manhattan was questioned. Bailey was being taken to Topeka to hand him to Seventh Service Command when he tried to escape, caught at Eleventh and New Hampshire streets and returned to Topeka.
