Lawrence teens power high tech summer camp project
Samantha Sparkes and nine peers at Microtech Computers Inc. joined a “Summer Technology Camp” to build two identical supercomputing clusters for the U S Department of Energy. The $6.5 million project uses seven miles of cables, consumes 340 kilowatt hours and 120 tons of cooling, with teens earning $8 an hour while gaining hands on experience under four managers. The effort aims to boost Microtech’s shift to supercomputers, now over half its sales, and may position Lawrence as a Midwest Silicon Valley.
