Safety signals planned for busy Sixth Street Monterey Way
City engineers plan traffic signalization and left turn lanes at the Sixth Street and Monterey Way intersection in Lawrence. The $600,000 project, funded by the state for four-direction signals, could cut accidents by up to fifty percent, with city costs around $60,000 and designs due soon. The corner has seen 27 crashes in 3.5 years, mainly during evening rush hour, ranking as Lawrence’s 30th most accident prone. Residents welcome safer turns as construction nears.

Steam powered harvests draw crowds at Kansas show
About 15 000 people flooded McLouth for the 38th annual Steam Engine Show and Threshing Bee as antique steam tractors and engines demonstrated how wheat farming once worked. Don Brooks built a 1905 1648 Advance replica, while Mike Wurm steered a 24 000-pound 1923 Keck Gonnerman engine named Engine of the Year. The event drew visitors from the Midwest, Florida, California and Germany who relive agricultural history and lament the machines' passing era.
