A Mississippi jury sentenced Lisa Jo Chamberlin to death for the capital murder of Linda Heintzelman and Vernon Hulett, with execution set for Sept. 29 by chemical injection. Two bodies were found in a freezer at an abandoned Kansas farm after a March 2004 case linked to drug involvement and an attempted robbery.
Federal audit faults Kansas City and Missouri for misspent or undocumented costs from the January 2002 ice storm that knocked out power to half the area. The IG recommends disallowing 9.3 million in questioned costs and cautions possible further repayments if FEMA agrees, while officials dispute key findings and promise to respond within 60 days.
