Beating death case links murder plot to gay men and arson
Steven Eric Mullins confessed to capital murder in the February 19 beating death of Billy Jack Gaither, 39, claiming he lured the victim with a sexual invitation and failed to strike the fatal blows himself. Co-defendant Charles M. Butler Jr. admitted helping burn Gaither’s body and destroy evidence but blamed Mullins for the murder. Mullins said he invited Butler after being propositioned and that both men planned to kill Gaither to steal his money.
