Kubota and Skahan win Lawrence state primary races

In Kansas House races for the 44th and 45th districts in Lawrence, Republican candidates Kubota and Skahan secured primary victories. Kubota defeated Michael Walsh 71.79 to 28.2 percent to advance against Democrat Barbara Ballard and Libertarian Jay Germano in the November general. Skahan won 1,005 to 905 over Martha Parker and moves on to face Democrat Forrest Swall and Libertarian Michael Davidson.

Baker University President Wins County Primary Race

Ralph Tanner of Baldwin, former Baker University president, defeated Lawrence resident Paul Shivel 1420 to 732 for the Republican nomination to the 2nd District Douglas County Commission. He will face Democrat James I. Chappell and Libertarian Damon Black in November.

Lawrence High teacher helps draft board certified standards

Lawrence High School teacher Paul Stuewe helped develop the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards social studies standards for adolescents and young adults. He aims for “board-certified” to signal a higher teaching level and encourages accomplished teachers to pursue voluntary certification after the standards are set. The Detroit trip covered the committee’s work and future scope across grades and subjects.

In the 44th House District Republican Brian Kubota led with 1446 votes versus Michael Welsh 568. In the 45th House District Republican Bob Skahan received 1005 votes to Martha Parker 905. In the 2nd County District Republican Ralph Tanner led with 1420 votes over Paul Shivel 732.

Officials seek Dole funding for Eastern Parkway plan

Gifford painting found among KU residence hall art

A 1867 Hudson River School landscape attributed to Sanford Robinson Gifford surfaced in Lewis Residence Hall as part of a 1950s gifted collection from KU benefactor Joseph R. Pearson. Helen Foresman Spencer Museum staff will evaluate its significance while officials note its condition requires work. The work, titled Morning in the Adirondacks, may be one of Gifford’s major landscape pieces.
