W W Hatfield proprietor of the 10 40 Club reported a break in Thursday afternoon. A cigarette vending machine and an amusement machine were pried open and funds stolen. A screen was removed from a rear window and the window opened. The burglary occurred between 12 30 a m and 3 p m Thursday with the stolen amount not yet determined.

Larger Rodeo Planned Hero
Plans are underway for the Jayhawk Rodeo to be held September 1 through 3 at the 4H Fairgrounds. Due to last year’s success, officials expect an even bigger event with Lawrence merchants offering free tickets to residents in the trade area via a registration drawing that requires no purchases. Stevenin Released On Bond Trial Date Set
Charles A. Stevenin of Baldwin posted 1500 bond after being charged Thursday with second degree kidnapping of his wife Beatrice and their two children. His trial is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. August 15 in County Court in Baldwin, after authorities say he drove the family to Coffeyville and returned them the next day.

Arson Case Hearing Continued to Aug 12
Preliminary hearing for Gary Wayne Mounkes and James F. Hill, both 18, in County Court on first degree arson charges was continued to August 12. The July 26 incident at the Old Mitchell Farm near Lawrence involved at least four other unnamed suspects. Mounkes and Hill are free on $1500 bonds.

A $45,000 grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York funds the KU gifted student program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for three additional years. Window Breaks At Former Shaffer Home In Lawrence
A window at 933 Mo St previously occupied by Harry Shaffer of the Lawrence League for the Practice of Democracy was broken shortly before 10 30 p m on Wednesday. the suspect fled and a neighbor reported it. The house is being remodeled for a new tenant amid Shaffer and LPD protests over pool integration earlier this summer. Dead fish garbage were dumped on Shaffer's porch and an effigy left at his door during those efforts.
