Voters showed light participation on Tuesday as the Douglas County primary drew about 11 to 12 percent countywide, with 9,500 of 79,075 registered voters voting at polling sites and nearly 1,300 advance ballots by noon. Precinct 10 workers Lori Cackler Barbara Pitner and Kathy Callen spent long shifts reading and chatting as turnout lagged, especially when KU is not in session. County Clerk Jamie Shew noted the precinct’s historically low turnout and the cost to close it due to needed voter notifications.
