AP findings show Blue Cross Blue Shield rate requests rising across states with increases up to 43 percent in North Carolina and 34 percent in New Jersey. Family coverage costs commonly 50 to 65 dollars monthly while hospital room rates have surged over 100 dollars a day in many facilities.
The Lawrence City Commission will hold a 7 p.m. meeting in city hall to discuss a revised housing code based on prior standards, replacing the 1971 uniform code, with public hearings procedures and the Sunshine Law under review. Public input and longer discussion time are urged, and a vote on hearings may occur after the hearing.
Six traffic deaths were reported in Kansas over the weekend. Victims include Terry Tetsler eight and Allan five of Oberlin, Sharon L Herman 29 of Lenexa, Richard A Kelley 22 Manhattan, Harold O Connell 53 of Wichita, and Bill Rodabaugh 21 of Girard. The Tetsler brothers died when the car their father drove left a bridge and fell into a creek northeast of Oberlin.
Baldwin resident Ailven F. Wasson, 34, held for observation after a two car crash at 11 54 a m Saturday at 28rd and Haskell intersection. Anna M. Lutz, 61 Overbrook, driven car, had failed to yield at stoplight. Linda J. Taylor, 24 Clathe, injured after motorcycle struck curb at 19th and Haskell when clutch slipped.
Airman Daniel J. Anderson of Eudora has graduated with honors from the telecommunication operations course at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas, a program run by the Air Training Command.
Israeli forces clashed with Arab raiders attempting to cross from Lebanon into northern Israel near Adamit in western Galilee. One Arab and one Israeli were killed, two Israelis wounded, marking the severest border incident since July. The clash followed previous exchanges and related diplomatic notes on U S aid talks and a Palestinian group’s stance toward the PLO executive committee.
Harold Wills former state fuels coordinator in Kansas forms a Topeka based energy consulting service. He notes the firm will help businesses cope with rising energy costs and changes while not retaining him in the new State Energy Office. In a separate AP brief, the Dominican navy seized a U S commercial tug with eight Americans aboard near Puerto Plat north of San Juan Puerto Rico.
U S auto makers plan to build about 1,914,000 cars in Q4 year over year output up about 6 percent industry sources report Ward s Automotive Reports says four major firms expect improvement in the new car market despite usual year end slowdowns.
CIA Director William Colby urged a behind closed doors briefing on intelligence costs saying public disclosure would weaken operations. President Ford’s budget chief Lynn refused to reveal costs, citing legal risk, while Pike and others push for at least overall figures.
Coast Guard review of the Kansas River bridge project is delayed by a communications foul-up. Officials hope to set a contract later this year once required navigable-waterway permit clearances from the Kansas division of water resources are received. Stanley Thoroughman, chief of the bridge section in St. Louis, notes the review is complete except for these agency clearances.
Maj. Gen. George S Patton III was set to assume command of the 2nd Armored Division at Fort Hood following his father’s footsteps. The younger Patton, a Korea and Vietnam veteran, would replace Maj. Gen. Robert Leahy Fair. In other notes, Indira Gandhi sought retroactive amendments in India, and Fanfani wed Maria Pia Tavazzani in Rome.
