Dictionary project marks Shinzwani English milestone
Harriet Ottenheimer, a Kansas State anthropologist and Tulane alumna, spent decades in the Comoros learning Shinzwani to build the first bidirectional Shinzwani English dictionary. From initial field notes in kitchens to a 7000 word database, the effort stems from her passion for language and women’s lives, funded by grants and NEH support.
