Resistance in East Cuba Tightens as Rebels Surge
In eastern Cuba antigovernment strikes and rebel flareups threaten wider unrest. Fidel Castro forces moved from mountain hideouts to clash with Batista troops near Aberos in Oriente Province, with insurgents reported killed and others captured. In Santiago de Cuba, rebels burned a service station and a bus driver was killed by a bomb. Censorship suppressed local and foreign news, while a general work stoppage followed the visit of U.S. ambassador Earl E. Smith. A resolution to remove Smith was deferred in Congress.
