Profit rebound boosts 1950 corporate earnings before tax cuts
New York August reports show 450 corporations earned 43 percent more in Q2 1950 than a year earlier, with six month totals rising 24 percent from 1949. The 1950 gains reflect prewar Korea and relief from strikes, yet higher taxes and costs could trim 1951 profits. Major groups boosted earnings, notably steel, aircraft, chemicals, pulp and paper, and metals fabrication.

Pot Luck on Trees Stirs Delhi Legend to Present Day
In Delhi pot luck tradition tied to a Moslem saint 750 years dead continues to attract crowds and bets. Legend credits Sheikh Syed Ali Bakr Rahim Tusi Wahidri Wakala Shah with guiding Muhammad of Ghur to Delhi’s throne in 1192 after blessing mud pots. Modern observers note pot displays on tree branches or near tombs draw attention and draw bets. Meanwhile in Lawrence Kansas readers see economic notes and a city report, and in Detroit a former Postmaster General James A. Farley learns of a newborn grandson weighing seven pounds three ounces via Caesarean birth at Jennings Memorial hospital with mother doing well.

Weapons aid to friendly nations tops wartime deliveries
Nearly 200000 tons of American weapons and military supplies were sent to eight key NATO countries in the past five months with total funds from Congress earmarked for foreign arms programs. France received the largest share as strategy focuses on strengthening Western infantry capacity. About 300 B 29s and 13500 tons of destroyer sized naval craft have also been shipped, mostly from surplus stock. President Truman asked Congress for another 4900 million for arming non communist nations as the North Atlantic area remains a top priority.
