The Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center at 4706 Overland Drive will be closed through August 19 for annual maintenance while the Outdoor Aquatic Center at 727 Ky remains open with special weekend hours on August 16 and 17. Monthly and annual pass holders will receive 19 free days added to their passes. Call 832-7946 for details.
Thirteen 7 and under children competed in the Pee Wee Swine Showmanship contest at the Douglas County Fair. With 250 pound Spotty the pig, Alyson La Dreiling, age 7, and her pig formed a friendly pair as County 4-H members assisted. The event, in its third year, aims to involve kids with livestock and build future interest in swine showing.
After nine years vacant the former Masonic Temple in downtown Lawrence will be occupied by The Greenhouse Culture church. The move to the southwest corner of 10th and Massachusetts is led by developer Doug Compton’s group. Pastor Jared Scholz expects services to begin in September with minimal renovations.
