Dying Austrian Pines Plague Kansas Windbreak Near Lawrence
The Romero family once planted over 100 Austrian pines near Lawrence and now remove about 25 as tip blight, pine wilt, and dothistroma needle blight kill trees. Pines, non native to Kansas, suffer under Midwest temperature and moisture swings, yet Romero remains emotionally attached, citing the wind in the branches.

Pine diseases threaten Kansas windbreaks and replacement options
Kansas gardener Romero faces pine wilt and Dothistroma needle blight spreading from the eastern half of the state. Dead pines, stumps, and resin patches signal infection. Beetles and nematodes drive pine wilt. Dothistroma weakens trees after years of infection. County agents suggest diverse replacements like Eastern red cedar and various spruces to sustain windbreaks, with expert contact for guidance.

Haviland Limoges Pioneers New Vase Technique
Haviland's Limoges style moved to Auteuil under Felix Bracquemond introducing nonstandard floral, insect, and landscape motifs on new earthenware. Vases were slip-painted, glaze-dipped, yielding an impressionist look. The movement inspired Rookwood, Pauline Pottery, and Cincinnati potters in mid 19th century fashion. A 8-inch Pauline teapot fetched $570 at Cincinnati Art Galleries.
