Earth appears less round since 1998 study finds
A Raytheon and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center team reports Earth has grown flatter at the poles and fatter around the equator since 1998. Using nine satellite orbits, researchers say the shift is dramatic yet small, less than a tenth of an inch, possibly due to water redistribution toward the equator. Lead researcher Christopher Cox notes the finding is unexpected and the most striking since 1979.
