Jets Nearly Hit Wreckage After Logan Crash
At Logan International Airport two airliners were cleared to land minutes after a Delta DC9 crashed killing 88. Air traffic controllers miscommunication led to fogged conditions and a mistaken belief the Delta flight had landed. Investigators say the DC9 disintegrated on impact.

Arraignments Delayed in Douglas County Cases
Two arraignments in Douglas County District Court were continued because cases had not been assigned to a division. Kenneth Childers, 25, Sacramento, remains jailed on kidnapping and armed robbery charges with a $30,000 bond. Nanette MacDonald, 22, Mt Pleasant, Michigan, aided him in robbing the Jayhawk Motel on July 19, with bond reduced to $15,000 and posted after preliminary hearings. The cases are to be reassigned Friday, with potential Sept 7 arraignments and trial settings if needed.

Hospital Opens Special Center To Treat Alcoholics and Addicts
Salina Kansas based St John s Hospital opens the Alcoholism and Chemical Dependency Treatment Center with a 24 patient capacity. The three phase plan includes detoxification and intensive therapy followed by a two year out patient recovery. Director Fr Willys Neustrom says alcoholism is a disease and treatment is possible.

The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department sponsors an all comers swim meet for all ages at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Municipal Pool. Entry closes noon Monday. a small fee applies.
