Apollo 15 rocks may reveal ancient lunar crust clues

Apollo 15 astronauts David Scott and James Irwin gathered rocks at the Apennine Mountains base that scientists say could be large anorthosites containing crystals. Researchers at NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center view the finds as potentially showing pieces of the moon's original crust, formed over 4 billion years ago, with confirmation to follow laboratory analysis.

Kansas City Man Dies at University Square Dance

George J. Williams Jr., 45, of Kansas City Kansas, collapsed at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday during a square dance at the Kansas University Student Union. He had been under a physician’s care. Williams was pronounced dead on arrival at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and taken to Kansas City for services.

Self-Service Gas Hearing Shaping Up in Kansas

John Baldwin of Kwik Shops leads opposition to a new state fire marshal rule aimed at banning self service gas. A public hearing on the permanent regulation is set for August 9 in Topeka after an earlier Sedgwick County ruling voided a prior ban. Baldwin argues consumers save 2 to 4 cents a gallon and that labor costs push prices higher. He notes at least 18 states allow self service, with some estimates over 30 nationwide.

Minor blaze hits Klepper Oil pump in Lawrence

A car pulled a gasoline pump at Klepper Oil Co on Sixth and Crestline around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, causing minor fire damage estimated at 200 dollars. Firemen reported the hose was still in the tank as the car began to pull away. The driver's name was not obtained.

Livestock Auction at Douglas County Free Fair

Six Break-ins Reported Over Weekend by Police
