Earl Mitchell critically hurt in train collision at crossing
Earl R. Mitchell 17 was critically injured when the pickup he drove was struck by a Santa Fe eastbound passenger train near a crossing east of Lake View yesterday around 2:20 PM. He was taken to Memorial hospital in Lawrence by ambulance in unconscious condition with a compound fracture of the left leg and other injuries. Mitchell, son of Mr and Mrs Owen Mitchell of Route 1, farm five miles northwest of Lawrence, was en route alone to assist neighbor Sea Roy Hurley baling hay. He has not regained consciousness. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School last spring and won the state FFA oratorical contest at Manhattan in May. He was to compete in the district contest in Chicago on August 14.
