Reported battle lines show Allied troops penetrating the front about five miles with Hun defenses collapsing to a depth of three miles. Maj. Gen. Pata Ube claims victory as German efforts retreat, while Allied commanders announce continued pursuit and readiness for further action amid mounting pressure on German positions.
Allied forces hammer German lines for four days in France as retreat continues north of the Ourcq. Tartennes et Taux and surrounding woods are seized while Contremain and nearby crossings fall to the Allies. Villages burn as Germans withdraw, with French and British advancing with limited opposition.
On August 2 the American line advanced along the Aisne Marne front with French support, driving through open fields despite heavy rain. German forces reportedly withdrew at night, while Allied gains expanded near Sergy and the Marne salient as Ville-en-Tardenois and Meuniere wood fell to Allied troops.
About 250 soldiers from the Army Training School at the university will parade Massachusetts street tomorrow, marching from the campus to Fifth Street then along to Eleventh before returning to the hill. G A R members and school Liberty trucks will join, with university instructors guiding motor cars built by the men. Mayor Kreeck orders no parking on the west side of Massachusetts between 1:35 and 2:15 for infantry drill demonstrations, as 400 visitors are expected.
A special meeting of the Social Service League led by Rev E E Stauffer of Trinity Lutheran Church will be held Monday at 3 PM in the M A building parlor to discuss terms for presenting the Jessie E Fulley Memorial hospital for city and county use. The former Lawrence House hotel building, donated by J M Falley, would become a public hospital under the league proposal pending city commission action that night. Walter Thiele, city attorney, was appointed to prepare the legal form and present the proposition to the commission.
London reports Maxim Gorky the Russian writer and revolutionary has an arrest order issued by a Soviet government investigating committee. The Daily Express Petrograd correspondent notes Gorky’s newspaper is banned permanently. Also mention of today’s heat record and University weather observation of 104 degrees at 3 PM.
The Kaw Valley Baptist Association held its convention at Ninth Street Baptist Church. Officers elected for the coming year included Moderator Rev. G N Jackson First Vice Moderator Rev J W Clay Second Vice Moderator Rev Ni J Burton Recording Secretary Rev L W Shnnon Corresponding Secretary Mrs Aireg Hulse Auditor Rev S E J Watson and executives Rev Griffith Williams and others. Mayor George J Kreeck gave an welcome address at the evening service as the group debated war topics and church roles during World War I.
Mrs W R Stubbs says Roscoe Stubbs is now in Eleventh Company 164th Depot Brigade at Camp Funston. Rumors of his rejection on arrival were unfounded. he has been on leave and wore Khaki, with no grounds given for any dismissal.
Lieut Herbert Jones killed in action July 19 in France. Son of Mr and Mrs Llewelyn Jones of Meade Kansas formerly Lawrence residents. Nephew of Willis Folks and grandson of the late J B Folks. Jones commanded a machine gun battalion.
The fragment from The Kaiser's proclamation ends with a drawn interpretation. Kansas forecast notes generally fair conditions tonight and Saturday with continued warmth. Temperatures show 8 p.m. yesterday, 8 a.m. today, and 3 p.m. today readings.
The Foods Administration announced sugar shortages will persist until late October or early November. Supplies will then boost from western Kansas and Colorado, with Louisiana cane districts joining by Thanksgiving. Cuban crops come later, Christmas or New Year. Households urged to can with little sugar and focus on dried fruit to conserve.

Federal indictments returned in New York charge Kr. Edward A. Rumely former VP of the New York Mail and Express and Walter Kaufmann former counsel for the German Embassy with participating in the purchase of the Evening Mail for the German Government.
The Second District primaries test whether Kansas will uphold prohibition by rewarding Congressman Ed C Little. Little authored the zone law keeping camps booze free, framed as advancing national prohibition and moral standards. Defeat, the piece argues, would be a liquor-backed repudiation harming prohibition efforts nationwide.
War Department issues an order to curb profiteering by merchants near training camps and army schools. Captain B F Rice of the local training school notes Lawrence merchants have treated soldiers well and says no complaints exist, though the department requests public disclosure. He stresses no action is needed locally.
Telegram confirms University of Kansas student Byron Mehl was killed in action July 21 while serving with Battery C of the Twelfth Field Artillery. Mehl, 21, attended KU in 1914–15 and joined the artillery in 1917, rising to lieutenant. member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and in France since January.
In Douglas County strong support for W R Stubbs for Senate is noted with many admirers ready to vote. The Journal World published a list of endorsers but explained it is not complete and that many leading men could not be named in one issue. Stubbs heads into primaries with broad local enthusiasm and expects a decisive nomination.
The Lawrence Twilight Base League starts its six week schedule with two games at ash Field and McCook Field. The University Army Training team will play at Haskell while the Lawrence team meets the home club at McCook Field. All four teams practice well and aim for two games weekly. Army members leave August 15 ending the season early, with hope for a second squad later.
News from New York reports the American tanker Possedon collided with a Dutch flag ship off the Atlantic coast last Wednesday. Thirty three crew members were saved, with five lost to exposure. Captain J Durie of the Possedon is aboard. details remain limited but local circles confirm the sinking.
