Recruiting Station Opens In Lawrence To Boost Army Enlistments

A United States army recruiting station was opened today in Lawrence above the Spoclair Office at 702 Massachusetts Street. The Lawrence unit, a Kansas City substation, will funnel recruits to Jefferson Barracks after examination and enlistment in Topeka and Kansas City. Corporal Chris Schmutzler led the move. Private Frank Haden arrived to cover during his 30 day furlough, with Lt Roger Mason overseeing later processing.

Leper Removed From Warkersburg West Virginia

George Rossett a Syriac leper who has been an uninvited guest since Tuesday was secretly deported by special train to Hikins his former home. Governor Dawson ordered the removal and the district kept the operation quiet as crowds were kept back by ropes. The attorney's office asked the treasury to take charge and move him to North Brothers Islands but no answer is noted.

Eighty Years Old Marks Mr Deming Birthday

N P Deming turned eighty yesterday and hosted about 30 friends at his daughter Mrs C R Andrews home on Ohio street. Born in 1826 in New York, he lived in Ohio, moved to Indiana, then Kansas, and settled in Lawrence on Orchard Hill. A pioneer horticulturist, he helped organize Douglas county horticultural society and built a large orchard. He remains a keen fisherman joined by fellow charter members Samuel Reynolds DG Watt and Martin Sedgwick. The gathering celebrated his long life with a noon luncheon and guests praised his work and interests.
