Haskell coach seeks reinstatement amid probes

Clay Mayes, the former Haskell Indian Nations University cross country coach removed in 2021, has filed a petition for reinstatement with the Bureau of Indian Education. He also requests release of investigative reports from the past two years. Mayes sent the letter to BIE Director Tony Dearman. The Journal-World reported he was hired in July 2021 and soon barred from practices while under federal inquiry into alleged hostile coaching conduct. Members of the cross country team said they were pressured by a no contact agreement and faced intimidation by Haskell administrators.

Lawrence considers incentives for Borders site redevelopment

Lawrence leaders will review a request by Doug Compton for incentives to convert the former Borders at Seventh and New Hampshire into the First Management and First Construction corporate headquarters. The city agenda includes a public hearing on a Neighborhood Revitalization Area at 700 New Hampshire St and a plan to authorize Industrial Revenue Bond financing to secure a sales tax exemption on construction materials. The project, stalled since 2011, seeks a 90 percent incentive package under the Neighborhood Revitalization Act.
