Federal fire center raises threat level to highest in 3 years
Federal land management agencies urge more firefighters and resources as nearly 60 major West fires strain crews. The National Interagency Fire Center activated the militia–agency option to call up federal staff and foreign crews. Over 24,000 firefighters worked West fires with 58 large blazes. The largest blaze in northern Nevada burned 292 square miles and was 10 percent contained. Evacuations spread from Nebraska to Montana and Glacier National Park saw a rapid fire growth and partial closures. Total federal land fires exceed 70,000 this year, far above the 10-year average.
