Rail executives meeting with 148 roads in New York and Chicago considered President Harding's plan for settling the nationwide strike. A key proposal would reinstate strikers with prior seniority if accepted, while wage decisions and disputes would be settled by the labor board.
A New York meeting of executives from 148 railroads discussed President Harding's plan to unify unions and restore seniority rights to strikers subject to the right of workers who stayed at work. Old employees would gain rights earned before the strike, while new hires would have only rights they acquired since. The plan calls for wage reductions to stand, end of farming out shop work, and possible national and regional boards for dispute resolution. Reports from Columbus Georgia and Amatillo Texas noted related unrest and a strike leader’s arrest. Cleveland dispatch says the New York Central will stand by existing seniority rules and workers hired since the strike. Chicago noted a proposal for a subset settlement among roads agreeing to Harding’s terms, regardless of full adherence.
Patrick J. Quinnk fireman at Swope Park was killed early today in front of his home. Ben Strother 50 real estate man is held at police headquarters in connection with the affair. Strother is brother of Sam Strother former public administrator who filled the mayoral term after the late Cowgill death.
Captain Ruacke of the U S Marine Corps will give a life saving exhibition and conduct examinations at Potter Lake Saturday at 2 30 pm under the American Red Cross first aid division chaired by Dr H G Chambers. He will issue life saving badges to those passing. Several University life saving course alumni will seek badges. the public is invited.
Mr and Mrs Bert Dale and Mrs Emma Eberhart will depart tomorrow for Colorado for a month long vacation Miss Mildred Carter of Oklahoma City will join her mother Mrs Elta Carter for a month long stay during the trip
Chicago was nearly carless at 4 30 this morning as 20 000 car men began a wage cut strike of about 17 percent. Most residents faced unimproved travel with improvised transport while elevated workers joined in to support surface car men. The walkout started after 10 p m and peaked by 4 a m.
Philadelphia reports a joint wage conference called by John L. Lewis, UMWA president, for Cleveland to negotiate a basis of agreement to terminate the coal strike. Ohio Illinois Indiana officials deny wide-scale talks while Michigan prepares for state coal stock measures. A hay rack wheel falls from a farmer’s rig on Kaw Bridge without damage.
A Dexter area farmer reports roughly 300 acres of wheat washed away by a recent flood near Arkansas City Swan Sand strum. He estimates the loss at 6000 dollars as bundles of grain and his farming machinery were carried away.

Fifteen people were reported dead and twenty-five to thirty injured in a head-on crash today between a northbound excursion train and southbound No. 11 from Dayton on the Cincinnati Lebanon Northern line at Lesterton suburb. Steam hissed as cars splintered and passengers fled to aid the injured.
Major H D Burdick reports KU ROTC cadets training with regular units are earning top marks. Twelve men at Fortress Monroe Virginia, nine at Camp Custer Michigan, and four at Ft Snelling Minnesota. The Fortress Monroe company won a general efficiency cup. At Camp Custer the engineering camp team took first in advanced course and second in the Yi. Three men at Ft Snelling qualified as sharp shooters.
Twenty years ago today Frank Strong arrived in Lawrence to become Chancellor of the University of Kansas. The institution then was smaller in equipment, buildings, faculty, and students, yet already the state’s leading school on the hill. Through his tenure, Dr Strong helped steer vast improvements and growth across the university.
A light vote was indicated in the Lawrence primary with 947 ballots cast by 1:30 PM. Precincts favored Republican ballots with ratios up to seven to one in one polling place. Forecasters expected a heavier farm vote if weather and harvest conditions disrupted threshing.
Thieves broke into G W Smiths home at 1637 Massachusetts street last night and stole three rings and a brooch valued between 2500 and 3000 dollars. Bloodhounds from Kansas City were used but arrivals were delayed. Clues pointed to entry through a window after a porch chair was moved to reach it. Mrs Smith, a light sleeper, and Mr Smith reported the alarm and disturbed dresser in the sleeping room. Police followed hound leads to a New York street house and halted efforts later today with possible arrests expected tonight.
During Ed Anderson's absence from Lawrence, Dr A W Clark will handle calls to the sanitary officer at telephone 160. Charles Hagle is appointed deputy sanitary officer to oversee the reed cutting campaign in Anderson's absence.
C W Smith Ford agency has acquired the Ford agency at Eudora and W A Carter will head the new operation. The firm name becomes Carter-Smith Motor Company, signaling a formal transition of ownership and leadership.
