Six volunteers in the first American test of an experimental AIDS vaccine showed an immune response to the gp160 protein derived from HIV. Dr. Tony Fauci said the study indicates safety and immune reaction, with further work needed to determine proper dosage and eventual vaccine viability.
The USS Sam Houston, an Ethan Allen class nuclear powered sub based at Pearl Harbor, ran aground off Fox Island near Tacoma around 4 p.m. Friday with 142 crew aboard. It remained afloat after four Navy tugs and the USS Floridan freed it at high tide, sustaining minor exterior hull damage and undergoing Bangor repairs. An investigation was started.
Panama's Foreign Minister Jorge Ritter denied any agreement with the United States to have Gen. Manuel Antonio Noriega resign as military chief but remain in Panama. A U.S. official said a tentative deal allowed Noriega to step down yet stay in the country, a condition Washington criticized as insufficient.
Tens of thousands of Christian activists braved cold weather to hear President Reagan's message of national repentance. The dawn-to-dusk Washington for Jesus in ’88 rally drew about 150,000 people, highlighting racial and religious diversity amid recent evangelical scandals. Reagan said prayer has strengthened the nation and his presidency.
In a rare Kremlin encounter with Russian Orthodox leaders, Mikhail Gorbachev pledged greater religious tolerance and support for perestroika aimed at broadening state church relations. He condemned past religious repression and noted a draft law on freedom of conscience reflecting new approaches.
