Seven Northwest Missouri State College students were killed when their car hit a pillar of an overpass on Interstate 29 near Platte City. Two women, Mrs. Mary Knowles and Mrs. Beverly Mayer, were treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a two vehicle collision at the K-32 and Eudora Tonganoxie road intersection. James Carter sustained minor injuries in the southbound pickup. The truck crashed into a farmyard garage, causing heavy damage. In Columbia Missouri AP reports an eight story University of Missouri Lewis and Clark residence hall fire near 230 am. No injuries occurred as flames were spotted by a student in a fourth floor window. Assistant fire chief Turner Rouse said the fire burned out before responders arrived and Chief Max Woods noted investigators will examine arson as a possible cause.
