W Laird Dean, Topeka banker and Menninger Foundation leader, told the Lawrence Rotary Club mental health ranks as the nation’s No 1 problem. He traced the clinic’s work since 1919 and noted Kansas discussion began in 1940.
Dr. Manninger discusses the Menninger Foundation’s impact as Kansas expands mental health care. He notes a 450 per diem start, 100 trainee psychiatrists, and growing openness about treatment. The non profit foundation funds an ongoing 1 year expansion and broad public understanding remains a goal.
The article notes surfacing on a two mile south front of K 10 was completed last summer and a further two mile stretch will be paved this year. A major bridge replacement over the Wakarusa River near Lawrence is in the 1956 schedule. Lakeview Road paving is set after Kansas Turnpike work completes, between Lawrence Country Club and Riverside School.
A bolt struck the George Allen residence on Route 1 around 6 p.m. Saturday, causing heavy damage to one side of the house. Fire Chief John Miller said the strike hit the ground wire near the television and damaged the roof and chimney bricks but caused no fire and no TV damage. No damage estimate is available.

Queenie Rogers of 916 North J Street was fined 5 dollars today in police court for drunkenness. Ralph Jones of 1137 Conn Street forfeited a 25 dollar bond after missing a court appearance on a drunkenness charge.

George Leyfang of Laramie Wyoming was fined $10 in police court today for failure to reduce speed.
Mary Louise Brown an 18 year old from Kansas City traveled toward Arizona to be married when a missing Lawrence girl Katheryn Britcher was thought to be on the same bus. Authorities questioned Brown who denied being a runaway and after a phone check with Lawrence confirmed Brown’s identity. The mixup ended when Britcher boarded a train home from Hutchinson and Brown continued to Arizona.
A San Angelo family of five including Sharon Kay Kennedy 14 and Dowling Kennedy were swept away when a flash flood carried a stalled car into the San Saba River near Voca Texas. W. S. Hale, who saved a foster daughter before vanishing, is among those missing as guardsmen search for bodies.
Lawrence reports heavy rain postpones the single baseball game between Kansas University and Nebraska at Lincaln. Coach Floyd Temple says two seven inning games will be played Tuesday with Bob Shirley and Ben Wiley to start.
Seven Lawrence High School pupils competed at the Kansas State Music Festival in Emporia after earning highly superior ratings at the Lawrence district event. Winners included Sandra Harding for piano solo and Karl Garrett for boy's low voice, with several others receiving superior and excellent marks in various instrumental categories.
Douglas County coroner Dr Byron W Walters announces he will seek renomination on the Republican ticket. The 42 year old Kansas City native, resident of Lawrence since 1931, has served as coroner since 1954 and held prior posts including deputy coroner and temporary health department director. He and his wife Helen have a daughter, Candace Sue.
Dre Worthie H Horr professor of botany at Kansas University was named president elect of the Kansas Academy of Science at its spring meeting in Winfield. He will assume office in 1957 after serving as vice president the previous year and leading the Junior Academy of Science for five years. Dr Baumgartner professor emeritus of zoology was honored on retirement as editor of academy publications.
Benjamin Geromini of 1145 Vermont Street was found guilty of driving while under the influence. He was fined 100 dollars and sentenced to 30 days in city jail.
Obituaries report the deaths of Mrs. Georgia Ramsaye 95 of Tonga and John McNeill 69 of 1146 Del St with services in Tonganoxie and Oak Hill Cemetery. Other notices include Mrs Hattie Sinclair 89 late of Lawrence now Chicago and Mrs Jennie Speerschneider 72 of Linwood Topeka, with multiple services and burial plans. Also Forrest Harold Carr 36 Sunflower funeral at DeSoto Methodist, Maple Hill Cemetery Kansas City.
Mayor John P. Crown proclaims April 2 to May 5 as Mental Health Week in Lawrence urging citizens to support expanded treatment facilities and increased research. The proclamation highlights severe shortages in psychiatric care, hospitals, and private psychiatry and calls for concerted action nationwide.

George Stevens, 47, of 1000 N. J. St, was injured near noon today when caught in machinery at the B. I. Anderson Co. rock quarry three miles north of Lawrence. He was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with pinched right leg and bruised stomach. condition not available. An earlier fatality at the site involved Joe Fink of Tonganoxie on March 22.
