Man Dies Directing Traffic on I 35 Bridge

A 63 year old Mission man Franz Haubold died while directing traffic around a I 35 crash in Kansas City Missouri. He jumped over a guardrail into the space between lanes and fell about 40 feet on Wednesday afternoon. He died at Kansas University Medical Center.

Lawrence Police Chief Swaps Lieutenants In Department Shuffle

Lawrence Police Department announces Sunday new assignments for five of its seven lieutenants as part of a staff education program. Lt Mike Hall moves to midnight shift supervisor and Lt David Cobb takes over the detective division, with other moves including Lt Charles Greer to the 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. shift and Lt Mike Reeves to day shift. Lt Dan Affalter returns inside as community services supervisor. Ed Brunt and Mark Brothers remain over technical services and crime analysis. Chief Ron Olin says rotations broaden knowledge and should not affect operations or citizen experience.

Rhudy Joins White House Health Care Panel

Lawrence pharmacist Marily H. Rhudy is named among 47 health care providers chosen to review Clinton administration health care reform proposals. She operates two Topeka pharmacies and is the sole Kansan on the professionals review group. The panel will evaluate policy options effects on doctors, hospitals, and care delivery, with a final report due to Congress May 17 and public May 22.

Taxpayers to receive personal property valuation notices

Notices will be mailed Friday and arrive this weekend or early next week. The documents will not include tax amounts. Clarifying the Journal World report, personal property includes mobile homes rather than motor homes as examples.

Free Summer Activities Fair at Lawrence High School

The Lawrence Journal-World sponsors a first ever Summer Activities Fair to inform parents and children ages 3 to 18 about summer programs in Lawrence. The event runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Lawrence High School cafeteria, with door prize drawings and exhibitor booths from local groups including Parks and Recreation, libraries, museums, camps, and youth organizations.

Bike rodeos teach safety at local elementary schools

A series of bike rodeos to teach bicycle safety to children will run in May at multiple elementary schools in Lawrence. Officer Stephanie Littleton coordinates with the Lawrence Breakfast Optimist Club and local merchants that donate refreshments and prizes. A bicycle license costs 25 cents.
