Lawrence students stage Olympic Day at Memorial Stadium
About 700 Lawrence students from 10 elementary schools became Olympic athletes for a day at Kansas University's Memorial Stadium coordinated by Riverside School principal Donna Osness. The event tied to Olympic Day in the Schools curriculum and included events like long jump high jump running heats and crazy relays. The day aimed to teach dedication sportsmanship and fair play with KU officials providing free stadium use and sponsors Hallmark Cards Quaker Oats Sallie Mae and Kmart aiding in medals and support. A video will promote the curriculum and Lawrence leaders anticipate national exposure next year.
