Centenarians to lead bicentennial parade

The Saturday bicentennial parade will feature 100 year old Marion Fowler as grand marshal in a 1917 Liberty touring car. A squad of veteran marshals with average ages near 95 will accompany him, including Stella Cornwell the 101 year old Bicentennial Belle.

Humphrey Won’t Enter New Jersey Primary For President Bid

Senator Hubert Humphrey announced he will not seek the 1976 New Jersey primary or fund-raise for a campaign while he will seek reelection to the Minnesota Senate. He left open a possible draft nomination but said he does not expect a future campaign and will remain a noncandidate.

Kansas approves $1.64 billion in 1977 state spending

The 1976 Kansas Legislature authorized fiscal year 1977 general fund expenditures of 807.6 million, with total state spending reaching 1.64 billion. Gov. Bennett may veto line items but the total is expected to stay near 1.64 billion. Reserve use rises to 46.3 million, about 14.4 million more than Bennett's recommendation.

Sun Returns Briefly Then Leaves Again in Lawrence Forecast

National Weather Service says the sun will be brief in Lawrence with a cold front dropping temperatures to the low 40s tonight and a Friday high in the 50s. Rain may linger into Saturday ahead of a dry, warmer spell. Wednesday set a 26 year low high of 46 and fog blanketed Jefferson and Leavenworth Counties with trace precipitation overall.

Visiting Russian professor praises Lawrence and KU

Victor Maslov visiting KU from Leningrad found Lawrence a friendly, quiet city with a large university and kind people. He noted few pedestrians, many cars, and praised KU's 19th century Russian literature program and its hard-working Russian-speaking students. He departs May 14 from Lawrence with memories of Americans.
