Brenda Loscher, executive director of Head Start of Shawnee Mission since 2004, was fired Monday after pleading guilty in Denver last November to defrauding her former mother in law of more than 150000 dollars. She received five years probation and was ordered to repay 66000. Board members, led by president Jim Lissony, cited policy violations and affirmed the decision. The agency funds Head Start and Early Head Start services for 200+ preschoolers in the Shawnee Mission School District, with about 2.5 million in federal funding annually.
A Reno County judge dismissed rape and kidnapping charges against Anthony Jefferson after the alleged victim, his ex girlfriend, refused to testify and was jailed briefly. Jefferson remains jailed on an armed robbery case in Hutchinson. The case can be refiled by January 2006. The woman, held for three days, testified she feared for her safety and sought new counsel with help from a victim rights group. Jefferson’s trial for the Hutchinson shooting and related charges is set for May 24.
Charles C Krider, 43, was arrested in Labette County on first degree murder and aggravated burglary charges in the missing persons case of Judith Shruim, 68. Her body was found four days after she vanished from her rural home January 19, 2004, near Chetopa, with bond set at 250000. An anonymous tip led to the arrest, but authorities did not release a cause of death.
