Elliott funds beacon for New York School pedestrian crossing

Lawrence leader Eva E. Elliott, 91, will pay 1600 dollars to cover half the cost of a new pedestrian beacon at New York School. The city will install a second beacon and cover 100 dollars for painting the crosswalk and signs. The crossing should be ready by August near 11th and New York streets.

Nursing homes fear higher workers comp costs

Kansas nursing homes may face a 20 percent rise in workers compensation premiums, possibly adding up to 3 million dollars to state costs. The Kansas Association of Homes for the Aging warns reform is needed as premiums could be driven up by 20 percent without legislative action. The group notes about half residents rely on Medicaid, potentially shifting 2.5 to 3 million onto state funds. PMID: none.

Haskell to Host National Postsecondary Education Conference

Haskell Indian Junior College will host a Bureau of Indian Affairs sponsored conference on postsecondary education for Native American students. More than 75 attendees from across the country are expected for four days of seminars on financial aid alcohol awareness and ADA impacts. The event marks the first ever conference of its kind and aims to showcase BIA funded institutions. Public welcome to seminars.

Governor urges solidarity against KKK anti King rally

Governor Joan Finney urged Black leaders to unite in Topeka next January to honor Martin Luther King Jr. despite KKK threats to disrupt the ceremony. Speaking at Wichita State University, Finney acknowledged the KKK can protest but warned democracy has no room for bigotry and pledged to lead the state in paying tribute to King.

Lawrence High School reaches High Q finals in TV showdown

Lawrence High School advanced to the High Q finals by beating Shawnee Mission East 295 to 255. The May 9 telecast on WIBW-TV will pit LHS against the winner of Shawnee Mission Northwest versus St. Thomas Aquinas. LHS seeks a second High Q title, a feat last achieved in 1989, with team members Cyrus Mody David Reeves Ravi Shanmugam Jeff Bartels and Chris Francisco forming the squad.

Battery suspect injures officers in Lawrence arrest attempt

Lawrence police Lt. Charles Greer, injured while arresting a 24 year old man accused of battering his girlfriend, was moved from intensive care to fair condition at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. The suspect, apprehended after he allegedly struck officer Kirk Fultz and Greer during a struggle at a mobile home near Brookwood Mobile Home Park, faces charges including battery on a police officer and aggravated battery.

City to debate 1.1 million in CBDG funds

Lawrence city commissioners will study how to allocate 1.1 million dollars in federal Community Development Block Grant funds to improve low and moderate income neighborhoods. Advisory committee recommends 783,121 for capital projects including sidewalk repairs. five neighborhoods listed with specific allocations. a new Jet purchase program seeks 25,000 to acquire land for resident homebuilding. A public hearing is planned for May 11.
