News arrives that a devastating blaze is raging in Williston South Carolina's core business area. Aiken fire department was called for assistance as the city confronts extensive damage and ongoing efforts to contain the flames.
James Stewart Barker died Saturday night at his daughter Mrs. Edwin Tupper’s home at 1700 Louisiana Street. The body will be sent to New Cambria Saline County Kansas for burial. Born Seneca New York August 19 1825. Survived by daughters Mrs. Edwin Tupper and Mrs. Earl Scott and son F G Barker.
The week features James Bryce ambassador to the United States from England visiting Lawrence with Prof. Jesse Macey of Grinnell. Bryce will speak at Hobinson Gymnasium Thursday night and at the University Chapel Friday morning, then attend the Junior Prom with Macey. Chancellor Strong and Mrs. Strong will host Bryce Friday dinner. Bryce, famed author of the American Commonwealth, and Macey, author of The Constitution of England, are highlighted figures in Anglo American constitutional study. Bryce gained early prominence with History of the Holy Roman Empire and later served in the House of Commons and in Ireland. He helped alleviate Armenian suffering during massacres and supported Boer War peace efforts, even climbing Mount Ararat with native hesitance.
A music festival report left out Prof Carl Preyer, noted as one of the best soloists. The omission drew comment since Preyer’s performances were praised as signal and better than his usual excellent work.
