Policeman Melvin Howe Shot in Northeast Kansas
A Lawrence police officer, Melvin Howe, 42, was fatally shot early today as he confronted a gunman near the interurban tracks in North Lawrence. Howe died after being struck twice, as partner John Ingalls pursued the suspect who fled in a Ford coupe with Oklahoma license 320743. The gunman escaped. a manhunt extended across highways into Lawrence while police recovered clues from the abandoned car.

Parole Granted to Milton Snyder for Forgery

Community Rallies to Support Slain Officer Melvin Howe
Citizens promptly pledge aid for the family of Lawrence police officer Melvin Howe who died in the line of duty. A relief fund is organized by the Community Service committee with contributions to be collected by the Journal World. The family faces mortgage debt and medical expenses as Howe left no police insurance and a small policy may not be collectible. The widow and a 13 year old son survive, the son is ill with spinal meningitis. Funds are expected to be raised tomorrow with a funeral paid at no cost to the family by Funk Mortuary.

Oklahoma City state operatives said an abandoned car linked to the Lawrence Kansas slayer of Officer Melvin Howe was stolen from Leonard Woodie of Madill Oklahoma. The license tag was taken from T Loy of Shawnee Oklahoma. Woodie bought the vehicle later from G W Talsiaferro of the state highway department.
