Miss Gertrude Evans an instructor at Haskell Institute in Columbus Kansas has received final instructions to join oversea Red Cross work in Siberia as a nurses aid. She is among eighteen from the southwestern department and will work in Red Cross hospitals and perform visiting nurse duties. Evans has six years at Haskell and is a Pittsburg Normal School graduate. She began Red Cross training after the war entry and completed related courses.
The public utilities commission approved a milk freight rate increase for Kaw Valley Interurban. Lawrence shipments to Kansas City will pay more per can or container, with specific hikes for ten gallon, eight gallon, and dozen quarts or less. Proportionate rises apply for longer hauls, changing rates to Kansas City and Kansas.

Announcement of Crane's appointment as the first U S minister to Czcecho-Slovakia is expected from Paris soon. Crane, private secretary to Secretary Larsing, has served four years in the state department. He is 33 and a son of Charles R Crane of Chicago.
Jose Cajucom a University of Kansas freshman from the Philippines testified in Douglas county court that Leo Hopfer of Sullivan Grove and Walace Shaw of Holton helped in a Red Vigil assault. He was robbed of his pants and hair cut two miles east of Lawrence after being forced into a car. Bond set at $700 each. further arrests expected as investigators pursue the other two suspects.
Former Lawrence boy J Lavin who served in the Argonne with the 88th Division visited Lawrence today. He lost an arm and two fingers from shell fire on the twelfth day after eleven days fighting, and later required amputation after six months in hospital. He bears facial scars from the blast and now lives in Topeka.
Practically all rural schools in Dougas county close today and tomorrow with exams on Friday and Saturday. About nine schools will stay open after Friday, then close by month end. Countywide closures extend nearly a month later this year due to the influenza epidemic that paused schooling for about a month.
Mrs. C R Andrews departed yesterday for a two week visit to Hays Kansas to spend time with her son Theo R Andrews.
Fearing mob action Sheriff W H Jones at the head of more than 130 deputies raided the IWW headquarters at Fourth and Jennings, closed the hall and padlocked the door. The IWW agreed to call off the national convention of its agricultural section and abandon the hall for a week, with advice to leave town.

The Dougas County Sheep and Wool Growers association was formed yesterday at the Chamber of Commerce with twenty charter members. L. D. Howard was chosen as association man to attend the district meeting at Ottawa on May 9 to arrange a buyers schedule. Prof. A. M. Patterson spoke on sheep production and wool market conditions. Seth Fenton was elected president and E. Ptacek named secretary and treasurer.
The supreme auditing committee of the Fraternal Aid Union, three members from different states, begins annual audit work. Members are Senator Ian A. Smith of Henderson Texas, C. F. Tipton of Trinidad Colorado, and chairman John Hasselberger of New York City. Ripley is reelected. Toneka April 24. At the stockholders meeting of the Sarita Railroad Company four directors were elected: Edward P. Chicago, Charles Steele New York, and Howell Jones Topeka.
