Long Beach Board Cancels China Ocean Shipping Port Lease
Long Beach harbor commissioners canceled a lease with China's state shipping line after a judge's order in a lawsuit by preservation groups and the cities of Compton and Vernon. The vote scuttled a plan to build a $200 million cargo port at the former Long Beach Naval Station, shuttered in 1994. Preservationists oppose the impact on historic buildings by a noted Black architect and on nesting sites of endangered Black-crowned Night Herons, citing traffic and environmental concerns.
