Hunger strike nears 4th day at Douglas County Jail

Inmates enter the third day of a hunger strike over overcrowding and unsanitary conditions at the 17 year old Douglas County Jail. They complain of limited exercise space as the gym hosts overflow inmates and threaten escalation if grievances are not acknowledged by Saturday. Sheriff Loren Anderson notes space issues remain, with 79 in custody and 19 out on work release or in other jails.

OU law dean to teach at KU next spring

OU law school Dean David Swank will serve as Kansas University’s Rice distinguished visiting professor of law for spring 1994. The move follows reports he was pressured to step down after supporting OU law professor Anita Hill, who faced controversy over her allegations against Clarence Thomas. Swank’s KU stint is only for the spring semester, with no immediate plans to extend.

KU landfill cleanup funding veto shows funding clash

Gov. Joan Finney vetoed a 1.9 million allocation for the KU hazardous landfill near DeSoto to pressure legislators to approve 2.6 million for Sunflower Research Landfill cleanup. She seeks 700 thousand more in the 1993 session while opponents cite contamination and water quality risks near Johnson County sites.

Remembrance service at Haskell honors AIDS victims

About 25 people gathered at the Medicine Wheel on the Haskell campus for a 30 minute ecumenical remembrance service sponsored by the Douglas County AIDS project. Participants shared prayers from Cherokee, Jewish, and Christian traditions as they walked the wheel and prayed for those stricken by diseases.

New Kansas lawyers sworn in at Topeka ceremony

In Topeka the U S district court clerks and the state Supreme Court swore in 178 new lawyers at the Topeka Performing Arts Center. Gloria Vusich and Carol Green administered, with Ralph DeLoach and Justice ro Richard Rogers present. William Swearer and Rusty Wright addressed attendees. KBA hosted a reception. Lawrence newcomers listed include Michael Castro and Ezra Ginzburg among others.

O'Connell Youth Ranch Directors Open House Era Growth

Elsie O'Connell donated land for the O'Connell Youth Ranch in 1976. Today three group homes operate there guiding boys toward adulthood. The Sunday Variety features the story of the ranch's origins and current programs.
