Kansas cigarette tax plan aimed at cancer research dies in 1977

Kansas lawmakers considered raising the cigarette tax from 11 to 12 cents per pack to fund cancer research at KU Medical Center. Rep. Lloyd Buzzi said he will try again next year, possibly with two bills, while tobacco industry officials oppose any tax increase citing higher costs and potential bootlegging.
