The Associated Press reports Hitler called up 1 900 000 reserves for winter battles on the Soviet front including 900 000 youths aged 17 and 18. Soviet spokesman Lozovsky says the rear is disintegrating while home front resilience remains.
A British spokesman said 50,000 tons of French shipping have been taken over by Japan and are likely ocean-going vessels. He refused to reveal details. French sources noted only one prior transfer, two months earlier in Indo China, pending further developments.

Miss Mary Campbell secretary for tenant purchase loans in the local Farm Security Administration office has been transferred to Hiawatha. Her home is Leavenworth and she has been in the area about a year. At Hiawatha she becomes a federal employee replacing county service. The Lawrence office vacancy is expected to be filled within a week.
The White House signaled that President Roosevelt would send the anti inflation message to Congress on Monday but the fireside radio address on the same topic would be postponed to another day.
A detachment from Company A 40th Ambulance battalion will stage an army field kitchen demo in Fowler Grove on the University campus tomorrow. Robert McLean of the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin began his fifth term as AP president. New vice presidents Houston Harte of the San Angelo Standard and Arthur Hays Sulzberger of the New York Times assumed office. Directors reelected Kent Cooper as general manager and Lloyd Stratton as assistant general manager. An executive committee was also reelected including E Lansing Ray and Stuart H Perry.
Wellington New Zealand Apr 23 The defense of New Zealand and nearby islands including Fiji has moved under a U S naval command separate from General Douglas MacArthur's supreme command in the southwest Pacific Prime minister Peter Fraser said New Zealand favor for a link with Australia under MacArthur was outweighed by strategic considerations in Washington and the government concurred in the arrangement.
Two merchant vessels torpedoed off the coast on April 8 with 21 lives lost were brought into Brunswick by salvage boats and towed to another port for conditioning. Fifteen bodies were recovered, while two remain missing. Seventeen survivors were rescued from one ship and 35 from the other.

President George P. Menear Jr and two Toledo Peoria and Western officials were acquitted by a federal court jury of violating the Railway Labor Act by coercing union employees. The not guilty verdict came after eight hours of deliberation, marking the first criminal action under the 1926 act. The government alleged threats aimed at blocking union organization. Mrs. Sara Delano Roosevelt left a net estate of 1 089872 with a New York transfer tax appraisal showing a 48431 tax. Under an earlier probated will President Roosevelt receives nine tenths of the estate and Hyde Park property. Mrs Roosevelt died September 7 at Hyde Park.
Admiral Emory S. Land told the Senate Defense Investigating Committee that stabilizing labor relations in the ship building industry is needed to end “infernal agitation” over the closed shop. He predicted a 12 to 24 percent gain in output this year and 25 percent next year if morale improves, noting contracts for 23 million tons of merchant ships and a goal of three ships daily by year end or early next year.

More than 500 insurance men expected in Emporia for the Kansas State Association of Life Underwriters annual meeting and sales congress. John A. Witherspoon of Nashville will speak at the closing session Saturday afternoon. Kansas City April 23 A body recovered from the Missouri river last Friday has been identified as Mrs Anna Gertrude Myers 53 wife of James A Myers Bethel Kansas The identification was made by her daughter Dorothy Myers who said her mother had been in ill health before disappearing from her home February 11.
Morris Adams an 18 year old Cullison high school senior was in serious condition from a stomach wound in Pratt Kansas. The gun intended for a school play was not believed to be loaded.
