Leipzig April 23 The preliminary proceedings for the trial of German war criminals have begun. The hearings also start in the case against Wolf ming Kapp and General Luettwitz charged with high treason.
Haskell in play Baker Haskell Institute will send a basketball team to Hakiwin tomorrow afternoon to face Baker University. Haskell beat Baker 3 to 1 in the first game of the season and aims to prove the win was no fluke. Dr Hyde sues Kansas City Star for 2.5 million dollars over the death of Thomas H Swope.
The Lawrence Gun Club will hold a shoot on the grounds at Haskell Institute Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock. All who are interested in shooting are asked to attend.
A divorce action was filed in district court this morning by May Longenecker against Arthur Longenecker seeking dissolution of their marriage.
London reports Anatolia has formed an independent government led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, head of Turkish nationalist forces in Asia Minor, the dispatch from the Exchange Telegraph Co states.
Red Cross Institute director Prof. Stolberg spoke to about 2000 miners at Franklin near Pittsburg on the Veterans of the World War constitution and the Red Cross peace program. He said the Red Cross should build a new world beyond relief work and warned about labor conflicts with the American Legion.
Curtice Spearman of Wichita will speak on the I W W at Americanization day in Lawrence on May 3. He has studied the organization and its methods, testified in a Kansas City case sending three I W W members to Leavenworth, and spoke at the Joplin Rotary convention before Mayor Kreeck invited him to Lawrence. His evening address will be illustrated with reels showing I W W secret literature.
Chief interest in Helena today centers on Montana's presidential primary. Republican candidates Harding Johnson Lowden and Wood compete for delegates while Democrats field no candidate.
The continental congress of the DAR marked its April 29 program with a pilgrimage to Mount Vernon. Delegates planned wreath placing on the tombs of George and Martha Washington as the keynote event.

Troops from Camp Lewis arrived in Butte Montana today to patrol streets after disturbances sparked by a no strike Sunday call by the metal mine workers union. The operation came without demonstrators, and several large mines planned to restart operations during the day.

Chancellor Frank Strong of the University was presented with forty one inch overalls by local merchant Abe Wolfson after difficulties finding pants long enough for his needs. Strong did not appear in the overalls today but plans to wear them soon. Former KU student Jonathan McMillen Davis, announced for Kansas governor at the Democratic convention in Wichita, studied at the university from 1888 to 1890 and was a freshman in 1890 91.
An electric iron left on a board started a fire at 12 10 this afternoon at 1589 Tennessee street. The blaze caused about 350 dollars in damages to the house owned by W J Stubbs and occupied by Mrs Longshore while the operator went on an errand. Herbert Dunmire and daughter Harriet of Kansas City Kansas are visiting relatives locally.
University of Kansas faculty voted to ask the state board of administration for a fifty per cent salary increase for all faculty. Chancellor Strong plans to present a budget proposal before June 1, with a projected seventy five per cent rise over 1916 salaries once adjusted for cost increases.
Two foxes were chased by hounds during a Kiwanis Rotarian fox hunt last night but no pelts were shown today. About fifty members of both clubs attended the open-air event, though wind limited audible chase sounds. Dr. Albright, Chiropractor.
Oscar Ousdahl of Merced California registered at Fidridge hotel then shot himself in his room. Coroner says death occurred about ten hours before discovery. A 38 caliber revolver. note found cites ill health. Surviving relatives include Fred Thurstan Elmer Ousdahl Alberta Canada and Mrs Skeet. He carried a Stockton 1918 registration card.
Judge C A Smart opened a morning session to clear remaining February docket items. Quiet title actions were heard. in Stidam versus Terry sale was confirmed and a certificate of purchase issued. Lawrence versus Valentine Oil Company was dismissed at plaintiff request. Union Pacific motion to set aside service in two railroad accident cases during government control was sustained.
Raymond A. Kent reports Douglas county Near East Relief receipts totaling 2844.31 to date with new pledges from Dr Bechtel and the Journal World and Knights Templar. Julius Marks elected adjutant of Eli Ferrell Dorsey Post American Legion with C B Holmes and Theodore Charlton named to the three member board. plans for a ladies night were discussed.
Miss Alice O'Brien will assume city nurse duties Monday and continue until about June 15 when Miss Nelli Kuhn returns from Chicago where she is finishing a course in public health work.
Rev Mr Creig of Topeka will lecture at Valley Chapel Sunday morning at eleven. Slides related to the World Interchurch Movement will be shown during the service.

Police report Joseph Rosen believed to be the same man known as Ja Roser arrested after entering the Clyde McGee home while residents were away. Chief James Monroe said Rosen would enter homes while no one answered the door and leave with no explanation. He reportedly traveled from Flint Michigan toward Adena California and had prior pattern of breaking in when houses were unoccupied.
Eva Rector, art supervisor in the Lawrence screen, will take a similar role in Atchison schools next year with a salary of 1809 dollars, a 60 percent raise. C. A. Christy, formerly from Pleasanton, Kansas, plans to return to Lawrence, having sold farms near Pleasanton and purchased the Wiedemann residence at 910 Ohio to occupy once possession is obtained.
M. G. Manley of Pomona California visits Lawrence to see his son Judge R. C. Mantey and old friends. It is Mantey’s first Lawrence visit in six years where he was a longtime resident. Drs Welch and Welch at 927 Mass are noted.
