Pulitzer nominee and UMKC English professor G S Sharat Chandra died after a brain hemorrhage. Born May 3, 1935 in Mysore, he moved to the United States at 27 after studying law in India and Canada. He was nominated for the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for Family of Mirrors.
Investigators now believe a mechanical failure caused the Holcomb IBP plant explosion that killed Oscar Dominguez, 31, of Garden City. Finney County Sheriff Kevin Bascue said chemicals used to clean machinery are unlikely culprits, with no criminal activity suspected. Gary Williams, 47, also of Garden City, suffered minor injuries. IBP and OSHA were notified as a company team investigates at the site.
