Police report 41 killed as 800 patrons fled panic in a rural twin theater cinema complex near Tabaco. Most victims were crushed during the stampede. 56 injured with one in critical condition. Fire started in one theater and was extinguished within an hour.
President Reagan will speak from the Oval Office at 7 p.m. CST on Wednesday urging passage of a compromise budget package. The plan would eliminate more than a dozen federal programs and subsidies and slow Social Security benefit growth while the Senate starts voting this week on spending measures to cut $52 billion and curb the defense buildup.
Los Angeles AP reports designer Rudi Gernreich, famed for pioneering topless swimsuits and unisex fashion in the 1960s and 70s, died of lung cancer at 62 after a terminal diagnosis at Cedars-Sinai. Historians review a Civil War era ledger showing Martha Dandrige Custis Washington inherited about 29 650 pounds and 17 000 acres of plantation land from her first husband Daniel Parke Custis.
