Steve Riley of Wichita East cleared 14-11 to win the pole vault and Rick Weissbeck of Topeka Hayden set a shot put mark of 59-6½, both new prep division records. Loren Jones of Phillipsburg won the long jump at 22-11¼ as the event saw two contenders fail to reach their best in cold, wet conditions. the 1940 Relays long jump record of 23-3¼ withstood challenges.
