Fulbright Warns Of McCarthy Dangers In Viet Nam Debate
Sen. J. W. Fulbright warns against a new era of McCarthyism invading Viet Nam war debate. He cites the healthy atmosphere but cautions mounting war fever may erode free discussion. He says hearings on Viet Nam and China will continue and hopes to aid public education and the Senate’s advisory role. Maxwell Taylor denies reports of force readiness, saying American forces have been effective since Jan 1. Wheeler of the Joint Chiefs echoes Taylor on war prospects and risks from deep splits in South Vietnamese forces.
