Wheeler Takes Stand in Montana Senate Trial
Great Falls April 22 Associated Press Senator Burton K Wheeler testified in his own defense in his Montana trial on charges of illegally appearing before the interior department for Gordon Campbell. He described negotiating a $10,000 yearly fee, later accepting 4,000 in cash with the balance to come later. He denied meeting Edwin Booth or hearing of George P Hayes until the Daugherty committee. He recounted travel in March 1923 and events surrounding his wife and dinner, opera, and sailing. Witness Richard Haste testified Wheeler did not sign a telegram to Campbell on March 14, 1923, about discussing a permit with Booth.
