Allied air power expands with U S warplanes ferried to British bases to join RAF offensive plans. Churchill approves a combined operations staff uniting army navy and air force. Reports tie this to Marshall Hopkins talks and possible invasion preparations.
Argentina announced that the 12,500 ton Victoria was damaged by a torpedo or mine, marking the first casualty among Argentina's merchant ships since the U S entered the war. The ship reportedly sailed with lights and flag visible, following government safety instructions to deter axis submarines.

President Roosevelt disclosed that he had directed the government to seize all patents controlled by alien enemies for use in the war and for civilian purposes. The action targets patents held directly or indirectly by enemy nationals to aid national defense.
Japan launched an apparent peace offensive as air raid alarms sounded across central and western regions after massive Allied raids on Tokyo Yokohama Nagoya and Kobe. Lieutenant Edward H. O H are received the Congressional Medal of Honor and a promotion to lieutenant commander after he shot down five Japanese bombers and damaged a sixth in minutes. President Roosevelt praised the feat as among the most daring in combat aviation history. The ceremony included O H are’s bride placing the medal, and remarks about a forthcoming city award in St Louis for navy relief funds.
University of Kansas faculty will form forty teams led by staff to dig dandelions on Mt Oread starting at 2 pm Friday. The event includes a campus picnic, costs twenty five cents per plate, and will focus first on the front yards along Oread avenue before extending to slopes.
