A fire at the Al Hicks place a mile north of Dicker's store last night destroyed a barn with a team of mules a cow five tons of hay ninety bushels of corn and some hardware a shed nearby and forced use of buckets when no large cistern was available. Fire chief Reinisch could not determine a cause and insurance covered the loss.
A marriage license was issued this morning by Probate Judge L. H. Menger to Charles C. Stump of Lawrence and Melva J. Reidel of Kansas City. The ceremony was performed by Reverend S. Klyne.

Judge Hugh Means of Douglas County Court ordered Sam Sweezer back to the county jail for a thirty day sentence after revoking his parole. An early morning crash on the Herd corner north of Lawrence left Charles Coleman seriously injured with a broken nose and possible eye loss. Six occupants were in a car owned by Daniel Baker. Lawrence Baker of Fisher shoe store staff was among the injured. Coleman and Baker were taken to Lawrence Memorial hospital after the vehicle overturned and piled in a roadside ditch around 4 30.
Mark Havenhill of Kansas State College engineering department leads drainage talks at Solon Emery farm in Sigel district about a large ditch and flood damage. He plans to visit the Farm Bureau offices in Watkins National Bank building tomorrow morning to consult with farmers facing drainage issues amid a growing waiting list.
At yesterday’s Rotary club meeting the new directors named officers Paul A. Dinsmoor as president Fred J. Kelly as vice president J Frank Jones as secretary Robert J Rowland as treasurer and C E Decker as sergeant-at-arms in the new administration.
Mrs George A Esterly entertained today with a one oclock luncheon in honor of Mrs Roberts Clark of St Joseph Missouri who is visiting here. She will also entertain tomorrow with a luncheon for Mrs Clark. At both affairs guests will be limited to old friends of Mrs Clark.
Fifth and sixth grade players in Lawrence have organized baseball teams and are prepared to meet each other and other teams during the current baseball season.
Final eighth grade exams set for tomorrow at India Station near Lawrence as district schools end term late May. Rural and eight month schools finish next week with make up days for late starts, while seven and eight month districts hold exams through May. Rural sites include Baldwin, Eudora, Lecompton, and India Station. Normal training exams wrap the year May 19 and 20.
A four member commission appointed by the US Commissioner of Education began a two day survey at Kansas University to boost efficiency in state schools. Members include Dr. I D Coffman president, Dr George R Zook, and J C Christeli s th financial secretary. The group recently completed similar reviews at Pittsburg Normal Kansas State Normal Emporia Hays Normal and the State Agriculture College with Manhattan visited first.
Reports say a bicycle from Gilbert Purvis location, a buggy tricycle from Mrs. A B Connelly at 709 Ohio Street, and a bicycle from Eldon Harris in front of the Y M C A were stolen overnight. Police were notified of the incidents.
Charles J Buckingham longtime Douglas county figure dies at 84 from pneumonia in Topeka. Funeral services Saturday at Topeka with burial in Maple Grove cemetery. He lived in Lawrence for years and ran a farm near Six Corners, came to Kansas in 1869 and served two terms as Leavenworth county treasurer. Survived by wife and three children Edwin J Buckingham of San Antonio Texas Mrs O G Markham of Baldwin and Mrs Lloyd B Smith of Topeka.
Mrs Mary Allen died at the home of her daughter Mrs G E Whitman in Lone Star at 8 30 this morning. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at the Washington Creek church with burial in Washington Creek cemetery.
Earl Frissell, guest of Mrs. A. G. Ulrich for several days, has returned to his Fort Worth home. He is a University of Kansas graduate and a Beta Theta Pi fraternity member.
San Francisco April 21 James T Maguire of Bakersfield, president of Kern Mutual Telephone and Bakersfield golf and country club, sues Henry Jacoby barber for 229.09 damages. He claims his mustache was willfully shaved while asleep under a hot towel, harming his appearance and ability to be recognized in public and at work.
Charles Sessions, managing editor of the Topeka Daily Capital and prominent Kansas writer and politician, will be chief speaker at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon next Tuesday noon. Sessional background includes secretary of state roles, governor aide, and Kansas City Star bureau head. Special guests will include Kansas City and Topeka correspondents, with the Odd Fellows quartette returning for the program and City Commissioner I. C. Stevenson leading the musical portion.
