Brownback consolidates Turnpike with KDOT leadership
Gov. Sam Brownback signed a bill placing the Kansas Turnpike Authority director under the state transportation secretary. Mike King of KDOT said the merger aims to cut costs across the 10 000 mile highway system and the 236 mile toll road. Critics call it a power grab targeting ETA head Mike Johnston Serb. Johnston declined to comment on the bill’s merits, saying his future depends on others and the KTA board will decide.

Higher sales tax needed if court rules against state
Gov. Sam Brownback argues to keep the 6.3 percent state sales tax as a cushion against a potential Kansas Supreme Court ruling on K-12 funding. He says higher revenue may prevent cuts to higher education and balance the budget, while Democrats blame tax cuts for current shortfalls.
