Hew finds no basis for sports complaints at Lawrence High

The Lawrence School District 497 was cleared of bias charges after HEW's Civil Rights Office analyzed on site data. The agency found no evidence of discrimination against black athletes in the high school athletic program and closed the complaint.

Kansas approves second school finance bill without signature

Gov. Robert F. Bennett said the second school finance bill will become law without his signature. The plan allows a seven percent budget boost for 1976-77, with $10.25 million more state aid and about a $21 million rise in local property taxes statewide.

Ford limits oil reliance by elevating conservation plan

The Ford administration's energy update places conservation on par with new energy sources. ERDA says efficiency gains could save 5.3 to 7.3 million barrels of oil daily by 1985, about one third to one half of current consumption. Robert C. Pair of police employees charged and suspended

Two Douglas County police workers Debra Armann and John Demby face charges of illegal possession of stolen property after an internal inquiry uncovered suspected thefts at TG and Y store. A third man Gene Planker and Raymond Goff Jr. were also charged, with Goff turning himself in. Preliminary hearings set for May 5 and authorities say arrests relate to internal department investigations.

Lawrence Chamber of Commerce annual meeting at Kansas Union

The 53rd annual Lawrence Chamber of Commerce general meeting begins at 7 PM in the Kansas Union ballroom with over 500 in attendance. Speaker is Michael Moscon of Georgia State University, a noted advocate for free enterprise. New LCC leaders will take office and a new multimedia promotion debuts at 7. Tornado injures eleven in Brownwood Texas causing airport damage

Eleven people were injured when a tornado struck Brownwood Texas late Monday night and three houses were wrecked near a pecan orchard. Nine were hospitalized and officials said the central Texas airport sustained about 1 million dollars in damage.

Rainy day brings beneficial rain to area farmers

Overnight rainfall totaled .51 inch in Lawrence bringing weekly total to 2.1 inches since Friday. Tonganoxie .6, Eudora .8, Lecompton .52 and Worden .51 inches. Eben Farley, ASCS director, called the rain good for farmers with no wind or hail and little erosion. More rain expected, easing ponds and water table needs. Dodge City saw 1.81 inches. River and stream levels rose but stayed normal. Perry Lake officials seek to raise level by two feet over three years.

Retirement policy review urged to reexamine aging

Richard Greulick, acting director of the National Institute on Aging, urged the United States to reexamine retirement norms at the 26th Kansas Conference on Aging. He warned against strict chronological retirement and noted a looming retirement-age bulge by 1995–2010, stressing research to align with industry needs and health considerations.
